Goals
To advance the shared goals and objectives in service of Pillar Two: Transformative Research and Creativity, IU will:
- Lead and drive the state of Indiana’s research and development ecosystem, building on key strengths in human-centered disciplines, health sciences, and STEM.
- Demonstrate significant growth in research productivity in pursuit of high-impact research and creative activity to improve the lives of people in Indiana, throughout the nation, and around the world.
- Prioritize research and creative activity that yield disclosure and licensing of inventions, discoveries, and innovations; entrepreneurship and commercialization; and expanded partnerships with industry, academic peers, and other key constituencies.
- Significantly expand community-engaged research and public scholarship in direct collaboration with Hoosier communities.
Metrics and markers of progress
Markers of IU’s progress against its goals and objectives will include:
- Expanding external sponsored research, beyond $700 million annually, including:
- Doubling the number of external grants over $5 million.
- Generating significant philanthropic support for transformational research/creative pursuits.
- Increasing sponsored research from foundations, industry, and government contracts by 50%.
- Increasing invention disclosures by 100%, licenses and license revenue by 25%, and the annual number of faculty and student startups by 100%.
- Expanding the number of community-engaged research partnerships undertaken in collaboration with community organizations and local governments.
- Moving into the top 10 of National Institutes of Health funding to public medical schools.
- Increasing articles, citations, and books per faculty.
- Increasing the annual number of faculty startups by 100%.
- Increasing the annual number of student startups by 100%.
IU will further this work throughout the university and with our statewide, national, and international partners.
